HOW DO YOU STAY CLOSE WHEN DISTANCE COMES BETWEEN YOU?
By Joan Regen-Ramirez writerjr1044@gmail.com

Claudine and Jennifer lived on different continents.
They met when Claudine came to stay with Jennifer’s family in Staten Island as part of an exchange program in her junior year of high school.
Claudine loved sleeping in the guest room of a big house.
In her family’s apartment outside of Paris, she shared one with a twenty-year-old sister majoring in husband hunting and a five year old who couldn’t keep out of everyone’s business.
During the summer the two girls shared together, Claudine introduced Jennifer to the opera, Paris fashions, and Balzac. Jennifer introduced Claudine to the cultural and literary delights of the Big Apple.
They learned a lot about each other in a short period of time.
When the summer drew to a close, Jennifer pressed a locket into Claudine’s hand and told her to read the inscription on the flight home.
After a teary-eyed departure at the airport, Claudine settled into her seat and opened the locket.
"If you have as much faith in our friendship as I do, I’ll never be far away."
